Esta obra consiste en una caja de vidrio rodeada por un velo de plantas. Entre ambas estructuras se conforma una zona buffer que alberga varias funciones.
La caja de vidrio permite tener una visión exterior completa, mediada por el velo vegetal, que protege la intimidad. Al mismo tiempo, las plantas otorgan la flexibilidad de abrir vanos podando en función del deseo de cada propietario
La fachada vegetal incide directamente sobre la calidad medioambiental tanto dentro como fuera del edificio. Las plantas protegen el interior del sol, pero además transforman en naturaleza una obra de arquitectura.
La cortina funciona como un jardín vertical, que permite un contacto directo y cercano con la vegetación, con las flores, perfumes , insectos, mariposas , pájaros y tierra.
Es un edificio que cambia a través del tiempo, y de las estaciones.
La fachada verde esta sostenida por una estructura de perfiles T y varillas de hierro horizontales. Las varillas forman una trama rítmica que se interrumpe en cada piso dejando un metro libre a la altura de visión. En el primer piso al frente se hace continua para garantizar la seguridad.
Para simplificar el mantenimiento de las plantas se ha diseñado una red de riego por goteo que recorre perimetralmente todas las fachadas y el jardín. La zona buffer posibilita el acceso por piso para la poda y la limpieza de los grandes ventanales.
El 40% de los departamentos tienen espacios exteriores de más del 50% del tamaño del departamento. Este edificio cree en el uso del espacio exterior.
Son 10 departamentos, casi todos diferentes. Ocho de ellos tienen acceso por un palier semiexterior de mínima superficie. A los dos restantes se accede por medio de una escalera particular. Por ser una obra pequeña, se privilegió la diversidad y la particularización de cada unidad por sobre el apilamiento y la repetición
El terreno es entre medianeras, pero una ellas linda con las vías del ferrocarril. En consecuencia, el edificio se acomoda en forma de C en 1 y 2 piso, y luego se despega, haciendo frente a la vía en el 3 y 4 piso. Así logramos tener una fachada de 25m de largo, en vez de un muro medianero.

Vilela building is formed by a glassed box surrounded by a vegetation veil. The buffer zone resulting between both structures holds several functions.
Extreme vision
The glassed box allows full vision of the surroundings, while the vegetation veil maintains the apartment’s inner intimacy. Its flexibility makes it possible for every owner to fulfill their needs of light and visuals by simply pruning the plants.
The green curtain improves both inner and outer environmental quality: it protects the apartments from direct sun rays and at the same time transforms architecture into nature.
The vegetation veil was conceived as a vertical garden so that every owner can interact with the flowers, perfumes, insects, butterflies and birds.
Moreover, the building is in constant change due to seasons and time passing.
A metallic frame holds the vegetation. Horizontal rods are placed in a rhythmical interval, interrupted in each floor so to leave a one-meter-long space of green-free visual. The first floor is an exception to this rule for security reasons.
A perimetral irrigation by drip system was specially designed to simplify the green’s maintenance. In addition, the buffer zone can be accessed through the floor level both to prune the plants and clean the building’s large windows.
The outer space
We strongly believe in the active use of the outer space: In 40% of the apartments the size of its gardens is bigger than half of the inner surface.
Like a house
Since Vilela building is a small housing development, diversity and uniqueness preceded repetition and stacking. Seven of its 10 apartments are different typology. Eight have their access through a semi-exterior pallier, while the rest of them, have special stairs.
The plot is between division walls (medianeras), but since one of them is contiguous to the train route, the building adopts a “C” shape in the first two floors and turns into a bar in the last two ones. Instead of a dark and tall division wall, the building has a 25metres-long façade.
